Brütal Thoughts With Jack Black

I have been getting really excited for Brütal Legend for months now. I loved Psychonauts, and anything Tim Schafer makes will be an instant masterpiece. But there is something more even more phenomenal about Brütal Legend and I am incredibly excited.

The marketing campaign for this game is ENORMOUSLY huge. Among the numerous videos and arts and talk show appearances made, are these things called “Brütal thoughts with Jack Black”. (Jack Black voices the main character, Eddie Riggs, in Brütal Legend. And if I may add, this is one of the things that I’m excited for the most. I enjoy Jack Black as an actor and as a comedian (even a singer) but most people hate his acting. But absolutely nobody could play the demo of this game, or watch the videos, and tell me that he did not NAIL this part. As it turns out Jack Black is an incredible voice actor, and I could go on, but I won’t.

These videos are amazing, there are seven, the fifth is the least funny and the sixth is the funniest.

Watch ‘em for a good time:

I'm just as stoked for this game as you are, but at the same time, I really hate these videos. Like, REALLY hate them. To me the whole focus in all of this game's marketing on "DUDE, JACK BLACK! JACK BLACK, DUDE!" really undercuts the whole point of the game, which is Tim Schafer's hilarious dialogue, not Jack Black's heavy metal shtick. I'm not even a huge detractor of Black like most, I just think that whole shtick has grown tired, and judging by how Year One flopped, I'd say most people are tired of it too, and trying to cater to an audience that maybe doesn't exist anymore makes the whole advertising campaign seem so misguided.

But hey, that's just me. :p
  • I totally agree, but at the same time, there's a thing about me where I do NOT ever get tired of things that I find funny. I can hear the same thing that I found funny once, and hear it again and again and never tire of it. I think Jack Black's ONLY humour comes from his metal shtick, he embodies it. And I like it. I have really shitty patience with some things (Waiting for games, Stupid people, Dane Cook), and saintly patience with others (Customers, Achievement Whoring, Difficult Video Games).

But this man, right here, (that's you Acre) said it right. The game is about how awesome Tim Schafer is making funny ass games. I just think that Jack Black did an incredible job of delivering those lines. Even if the jokes he makes up himself aren't all that funny.
